Michael Kuruvilla | First Malayalee police chief in US, rare achievement

Chicago: Michael Kuruvilla, a Malayalee has been appointed as the new police chief in Brookfield, USA. This is the first time a Malayalee has become the police chief of a city in United States.

Michael Kuruvilla has been selected as the new police chief for the city of Brookfield on the basis of his commendable service over the past 15 years. His study and work experience in social work helped for his new achievement. The 38-year-old has been deputy police chief for the past two years. Michael Kuruvilla, who took charge recently and says his main mission is to protect the public.

Although he was born in Chicago, he grew up in a Malayalee background. The parents are from Kottayam. His wife Sibil is also a Malayalee. Last year he was selected by the International Association of Police Chiefs as one of the winners of the ‘Police Under 40’ award for those under the age of forty.

Even though there are Malayalee police officers in high places in big cities like New York, this is the first time that a Malayalee has a police presence at the head of a city in the United States. Colleagues are also confident that the new police chief will do exemplary work.
